1st class school closure suggested work.
1st Class – Suggested Topics for the coming week
Literacy:
• Daily reading- Read a book from home (Approx. 15 minutes per day). If you wish to obtain additional reading material online, register for free on Oxfordowl.co.uk. Go to the ebooks section and you will find a huge array of age appropriate reading books from Oxford Reading Tree as well as other publishers.
• Writing- Write a letter to a friend and pop it in the post! As we are all practicing social distancing, many of us will be missing our friends. This would be a great way for children to communicate while using their literacy skills.
• Writing – Instructional writing: How to make rice crispie buns. Encourage pupils to write a list of ingredients/equipment to begin with. Follow up with numbered step by step instructions on what to do. Use time openers (first, next, then, after that etc) and bossy verbs (put, stir, mix etc). Have fun trying out your written instructions and make the Rice Crispie buns for real…yum!
Maths:
• Continually practise mental maths skills. Try counting forward and backwards within 100, also skip counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. For an additional challenge, try counting on or back in tens from any number e.g. 36, 46, 56, 66, 76 etc.
• Mental addition/subtraction. Adding/subtracting two numbers mentally using strategies developed in class. This could be extended to include worded problems e.g. There are 12 cars in the car park. 7 more cars arrived, how many cars are there now?
• Time- Pupils in 1st class should be able to read the time on the hour and the half hour. Add additional questions such as ‘What time will it be in one hour/3hours? What time was it 2 hours ago etc. Try teachingtime.co.uk for some useful tools.
• Don’t forget there are numerous maths games and activities online to help keep the mind sharp. Topmarks ‘Hit the button’ is one we use in class and love!
Irish:
Folensonline.ie have made their resources available to parents during this time. Use the code Prim20 as the roll number to access the Abair Liom programme that we use in class. Pupils can revise vocabulary and play games based on each unit covered. You can also access our Planet Maths 1 book and ‘Two Little Frogs’ literacy book from here.
Other:
Get plenty of exercise and fresh air!
Go for a walk/run
Try ‘Gonoodle.com’ or ‘Just Dance’ on youtube.
Joe Wicks is doing daily P.E activities on youtube
Why not take this opportunity to teach your child useful skills such as how to tie their shoe laces.
